Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom: The Escape of William and Ellen Craft From Slavery (Annotated)

Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom is not an anthology in the conventional sense but a collaborative slave narrative whose double authorship gives it the richness of multiple perspectives. First published in 1860, it recounts a daring escape from Georgia to the North through suspenseful travel writing, documentary testimony, and abolitionist argument. Its most unforgettable episodes-Ellen Craft's strategic passage as a white male planter and William Craft's performance as her enslaved attendant-expose slavery's dependence on racial surveillance, gendered convention, and legal violence. Ellen and William Craft brought to this account the authority of lived experience: both had been enslaved, separated from family and security by the institution they indict, and became prominent antislavery lecturers after their flight. Their narrative belongs to the nineteenth-century African American slave-narrative tradition and the wider transatlantic abolitionist movement, yet its attention to disguise, mobility, marriage, and self-fashioning broadens that tradition. Their intertwined voices reveal freedom as a collective undertaking shaped by courage, improvisation, and political witness. This volume rewards readers seeking an essential account of slavery, resistance, and abolitionist print culture. It offers a compelling opportunity to examine how autobiography becomes political testimony, while its shifting social roles invite reflection on race, gender, class, and citizenship. Read alongside other freedom narratives, the Crafts' work generates a vital dialogue about identity, agency, and the perilous routes by which freedom was claimed.
