Harold Bloom
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A classic of American literature that brilliantly portrays the Roaring Twenties. No one knew exactly who Gatsby was. Some said he had been a German spy during World War I; others claimed he was related to one of Europe's royal families. Yet no one surpassed him in his lavish hospitality. The most marvelous parties took place in his magnificent Long Island mansion. The irony of this fabulous façade was that he had not built it to dazzle the world, his friends, or his wife, but to impress a girl he had loved, who was his dream, his illusion. "The Great Gatsby has few rivals as the great American novel of the twentieth century. Upon rereading it once more, my initial and first reaction is renewed pleasure." Harold Bloom
Francis Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1896. At the age of twelve, he witnessed Procter & Gamble dismiss his father, complicating the family's finances. He studied at Princeton, enlisted in the army, and during his military training in Alabama met the love of his life: Zelda Sayre. Fearing he might die in the war, he quickly wrote the novel that would bring him fame: This Side of Paradise (1920). He married Zelda and together they became epitomes of the "Lost Generation", as Gertrude Stein named it. None of his later novels repeated the initial success, but three of them are now considered classics: The Great Gatsby (1925), Tender Is the Night (1934), and the posthumous The Last Tycoon (1941), along with many of his short stories and the extraordinary autobiographical essay The Crack-Up (1945). After committing Zelda to a psychiatric hospital, he died in Hollywood, bankrupt, at the age of forty-four.
