Francis Godwin's The Strange Voyage and Adventures of Domingo Gonsales, to the World in the Moon is a foundational work of early modern speculative fiction, blending travel narrative, satire, utopian reflection, and proto-scientific imagination. Through the Spanish adventurer Gonsales and his ingenious flight by trained "gansas," the book explores lunar geography, altered gravity, language, society, and moral order. Its lucid, ironic prose places it in conversation with Lucian, More, and the voyages of discovery, while also anticipating later science fiction. Godwin, an Anglican bishop and historian, wrote at a moment when European cosmology was being transformed by Copernican astronomy, telescopic observation, and debates about the plurality of worlds. His clerical learning, historical discipline, and awareness of contemporary science helped shape a narrative that is playful yet intellectually serious, using fantasy to test assumptions about politics, religion, nature, and human pride. This book is highly recommended to readers interested in the origins of science fiction, Renaissance and early modern literature, or imaginative responses to the Scientific Revolution. Brief, elegant, and remarkably inventive, it rewards both scholarly attention and adventurous curiosity.
