On a bitter cold, dark night in December 1609, deep in the icy cellars of a castle in ruins, the conspirators of a terrifying plot await the arrival of two horseback riders dressed in black. One is among the most powerful men of the kingdom and the other, a horribly disfigured man, is no doubt the most repulsive specimen that evil has spawned in centuries . Under their orders, a half crazed, blood thirsty army awaits its hour to participate in a blood bath that will shake the entire country during the six months that Henry IV has left to live.
But there is one man who wields the sword and the saber like no other, a man feared and respected on land and on the seas, one man and his tough, faithful companions who, like him, are loyal to Henry IV, the first king in history to have spoken of free will. That man is Thomas de Pomonne, Count of Nissac and Admiral of the Eastern seas.
From Denmark to the African coast but more often in the narrow, shadowy streets of Paris, Nissac must be prepared for everything: duels, explosions, pirating, weapon smuggling, demons and marvels. And yet, in spite of his superhuman efforts, Nissac believes he has failed his king and furiously sets out to punish the guilty. Only to discover in an amazing turnaround, that the king is perhaps not dead after all.
