The biography of Rahel Varnhagen, begun around 1930 in Berlin, completed in 1938 in exile in Paris, published twenty years later, first in English, then in German. Hannah Arendt's biography of Rahel Varnhagen-a grand farewell to Jewish assimilation in Germany. The book was begun at the end of the Weimar Republic, when the signs of dark times were already apparent, and completed in 1938 during her exile in Paris. It was not published until twenty years later, first in English translation, then in German. A first draft of the biography from 1933 has been preserved in the estate of her teacher and friend Karl Jaspers and is published for the first time in this edition. Looking back, Arendt writes that, in addition to the Jewish question, she was interested in what the thinker from around 1800 understood as fate or destiny ("Schicksal"): "Everyone who knows they have a great Schicksal, is actually given one." She describes Rahel Varnhagen as her best friend, who unfortunately was dead for a hundred years.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) was one of the most significant political thinkers and writers of the 20th century. Forced into emigration by the Nazi regime, she wrote her works both in English and in German after finding a new home and beginning in the United States.
