This is the story of the last time I saw my brother... There are three ways to measure time: with clocks, with calendars, or with the notches I carve into the doorframe. I have chosen the latter. In a library south of Madrid, books are not merely stored; they get lost, annotated, or left behind intentionally. Someone writes in the margins. Someone fails to return what they borrowed. Someone leaves a box at the door and vanishes. Every night, my brother Karim pulls down the security shutter and waits for our mother to come home in the early hours. Teresa, the librarian, is surrounded by stories yet trapped in her own, unsure of how to bring it to a close. Pedro is the teacher who spends eighteen minutes with my brother every day--and he won't let anyone stop him. And then there is me, marking the frame of my bedroom door on every birthday spent without my brother Karim. There are things we hold onto before realizing they will cause us pain. And the hardest ones are those that cannot fit between the pages of any book.
