In The Daughter of Time, Josephine Tey transforms the detective novel into an inquiry into historiography itself. Confined to a hospital bed, Inspector Alan Grant turns from conventional police work to the alleged crimes of Richard III, especially the murder of the Princes in the Tower. Through documents, portraits, and competing narratives, Tey crafts a lucid, ironic, and intellectually suspenseful work that stands apart within Golden Age crime fiction, replacing clues in drawing rooms with the evidentiary instability of history. Josephine Tey was the pen name of Elizabeth MacKintosh, a Scottish writer who also achieved success as the dramatist Gordon Daviot. Her theatrical experience sharpened her sense of character, motive, and public performance, all central to this novel's reassessment of reputation. Writing in postwar Britain, Tey was alert to propaganda, received opinion, and the ways institutions manufacture certainty-concerns that clearly animate Grant's skeptical investigation. This is an essential book for readers who enjoy mysteries of the mind as much as mysteries of action. Elegant, provocative, and quietly radical, it invites readers to distrust easy verdicts and to experience historical research as a form of detection.
