Essays and stories from Hearn's first years in Japan - his students in Kyushu, a stone Buddha, jiujutsu as a philosophy of yielding, two lovers on a railway line, and a former student going off to the Sino-Japanese war. Written while he was still learning the country rather than explaining it. This edition is bound with 57 plates of paintings, among them works by Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai and Bronzino, dating from 1300 to 1893.
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was a writer born on the Greek island of Lefkada to a Greek mother and an Irish father, raised in Dublin, and a newspaperman in Cincinnati and New Orleans before he sailed to Japan at forty. He married there, took the name Koizumi Yakumo, and taught literature in Tokyo. His works include Out of the East, Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan, Kwaidan, and In Ghostly Japan.
