A Charming Achievement in Eight Songs by Lewis Carroll on the Hunting of the Snark (or Nonsense in Eight Fits), in the translation of Vladimir Gandelsman. And his - Gandelsman's - no less charming essay, Grandpa's Fairy Tale. Here is how that essay begins: "My grandfather, a British subject, philosopher and mathematician, came to Russia in 1934. He was one of those who had learned Russian 'if only for the reason that..., ' sympathized with Communist ideas, and wanted to see everything with his own eyes. Whose else? In Moscow, he was arranged a meeting with the Soviet mathematician Bellman, who even then had a gift for extracting square roots from practically nothing; and Bellman, having shown the enthusiastic tourist Moscow and Leningrad, invited him on an expedition sponsored by the Academy of Sciences to Sovnarkom Island (in academic circles, shortened to Snark) in the Laptev Sea. Bellman, just in case, knew English."
