"Mat'" (Mother) by Maxim Gorky, originally published in 1906, is a seminal work of Russian literature. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Russia, the novel tells the story of Pelageya Vlasova, a working-class woman who becomes increasingly involved in revolutionary activity after her son, Pavel, is arrested for socialist agitation. Through Pavel's activism and the injustices she witnesses, Pelageya undergoes a profound transformation, evolving from a submissive and uneducated peasant woman into a politically aware and determined revolutionary. Gorky's powerful narrative explores themes of social injustice, class struggle, and the awakening of political consciousness. "Mat'" is celebrated for its realistic portrayal of working-class life and its depiction of the burgeoning revolutionary movement in Russia. This edition makes Gorky's classic accessible to a new generation of readers, preserving the historical and literary significance of this enduring novel.
