ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The original story of one of the most famous monsters in literary history.
Translated by Silvia Alemany Vilalta.
Introduction by Alberto Manguel.
In the summer of 1816, the poet Percy B. Shelley and his wife Mary met with Lord Byron and his doctor at a villa on the shores of Lake Leman. At Lord Byron's urging, and to liven up a stormy evening, they decided that each would invent a ghost story. The quietest and most reserved, Mary Shelley, thus gave life to what would become her most famous character: Dr. Frankenstein. Within a year, she would complete the novel.
The story is well known: a scientist decides to create a creature with a life of its own, which he then rejects. A metaphor for life, freedom, and love, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is a wonderful fable with all the ingredients of the great myths, a great classic that we now recover with a new translation and preceded by a splendid study by Alberto Manguel on the influence of myth on the imagination of cinema.
