ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The international literary phenomenon praised by Elena Ferrante and Haruki Murakami, a story of femininity and class in the twenty-first century.
On a sweltering summer day, Makiko travels to Tokyo to visit her sister Natsu. Unable to accept the changes in her body after giving birth, Makiko is obsessed with the idea of undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Meanwhile, her twelve-year-old daughter Midoriko is paralyzed by the fear of impending puberty and can only express herself through a notebook. Natsu, thirty years old, is an aspiring writer struggling with her own indeterminate identity of being neither "daughter" nor "mother."
Gathered in a working-class neighborhood in Tokyo, they spend several days together in which Midoriko's silence becomes a catalyst for confronting their fears--many of them imposed by being women in today's society--and their family secrets. Endorsed by Haruki Murakami and Elena Ferrante, Mieko Kawakami has become an international literary phenomenon, blending comedy and realism to paint a portrait of contemporary working-class femininity.
