ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A book about power and the internal struggles of the Catholic Church, written in Santiago Roncagliolo's signature thriller style.
April 2025. The Catholic Church is on the brink of a rupture. Two theologies, perhaps two gods, are fighting for power. One lives in tradition and within the temples, while the other reveals itself among the poor and those who suffer. Following the death of Pope Francis, the clash between these two visions sparks a political war inside the Vatican.
One of the cardinals in the conclave, Robert Prevost, has specialized in confronting the Church's darkest shadows. He has dealt not only with cases of clerical sexual abuse, but also with financial crimes and even hitmen working on behalf of priests. Until 2023, he was merely a missionary in a poor province of South America, yet he is about to become Pope Leo XIV.
Santiago Roncagliolo reveals in this book the secret story behind the election of a pope unlike any of his predecessors. In doing so, he also reconnects with his own history as a member of a broken family. The result is a compelling exploration of how faith helps people confront suffering, heal pain, and fight against Evil.
